March is National Nutrition Month
March 2007
This is National Nutrition month and the American Dietetic Association
has focused this years campaign on food fads. From quick weight loss diets
to supplements that detoxify or revitalize, not to mention that magic
potion that delivers the fountain of youth, this is a multi-billion dollar
a year business. The reality is that most of these fads cannot be backed
up by science, do not measure up to their claims, and some may actually
jeopardize our health. If not our health, it definitely will put a dent
in our budget.
If it sounds too
good to be true… it usually is!
HOW
TO SPOT A “FOOD FAD”
Use these
guidelines to question a food fad
Does the claim use non-scientific terms like “revitalize,”
“detoxify” or “balance your body with nature”?
Does it claim to increase stamina, stimulate your body’s healing
power or boost your energy level? One single product cannot increase your
stamina, strength or immunity.
Does the claim offer “proof” based on personal testimonials
rather than sound science?
Nutrition is a science, based on fact, not emotional belief.
Does it claim it can “treat,” “cure,”
or “prevent” all sorts of health problems?
No product or regimen can treat all that ails you. Nutrition intervention
is typically a part of your overall health care, not the only factor.
Does the claim mention a “secret formula” or fail
to list ingredients or possible side effects on the label?
By law, medications must carry product information on the package including;
ingredients, use, dosage, warnings, precautions and what to do if reactions
occur. They require approval by the government after extensive clinical
drug trials.
Supplements are classified as a food versus a medication and are not subject
to this under the law. Safety and effectiveness are often not tested.
Ingredients often are not on the label.
