Current research suggests that a long life is no accident! A long and
healthy life is often attributed to as a “gift from the gods”.
Gerontologists believe differently, and it has become the focus of intense
scientific research. How one gets to be one hundred depends on several
factors including our genes and lifestyle. In addition, what and how much
you eat, where you live and what types of stress and trauma you experience
can also be contributing factors. About 20-30% is genetically determined.
The dominant factor is lifestyle. Although we can’t change our genes,
we can make lifestyle changes which may extend our life by as much as
25 years.
KEYS TO HEALTHY AGING & LONGEVITY
GENES— Exceptional longevity runs strongly in families.
This is the only factor that we cannot change. If some of your family
members have lived into their 90’s or later, this is a plus.
INTEREST—Maintain
a social network with extended family and friends. A strong social support
system keeps us connected and can provide emotional support. Be involved
with younger people to keep a youthful outlook.
EXERCISE—Get
plenty of physical and mental exercise. Set aside at least thirty minutes
a day, three days a week for physical exercise. Regularly take on activities
that challenge your brain.
NUTRITION—Both
what and how much we eat seem to be factors for longevity.
What to
eat: Diets that are low in fat and salt, abundant in vegetables
and fruits that are packed with fiber and antioxidant substances are
the key. Include soy, as it is rich in flavonoids, the antioxidants
strongly linked to low rates of cancer. These foods can protect against
heart disease, stroke and cancer.
How much to eat: Calorie reduction has significant
effects on longevity. Make sure your diet keeps you lean. Try to eat
only to a point that makes you 80% satisfied.
ATTITUDE—It
is important to have a strong character but to be flexible. Optimism is
essential. Approach life with good humor and let go of things that are
stressful.
THE
BOTTOM LINE
Eat sensibly. If you choose to drink alcohol do it moderately. Keep active
and have a lot of hobbies. Have fun, laugh and play!
Be
flexible, have many friends. Plan so much invigorating work that there
is not time to die and no regrets when you do.
