Exercise– Beyond Weight Control

Do you feel tired and worn out? Are you looking for that fountain of youth?  You may be surprised to know that physical activity (yes, exercise!) may be just what you need.  Recent research is linking exercise to much more than weight control.  Take a closer look at the benefits it may hold!

The Benefits of Exercise ~ Beyond A Healthier Weight

  • Heart Disease—Exercise can directly reduce the risk of heart disease, even if you are overweight.  Recent studies suggest that the positive impact of exercise on heart disease is not just from losing weight. The actual way the heart is protected is not clear, but a theory is that exercise reduces substances released by fat cells that promote the formation of blood clots.
  • Cancer Risk—Researchers have found that exercise may be protective against cancer.  The theory is that physical activity lowers cancer risk through weight control and by controlling body fat.  It may also be that exercise boosts the immune system and alters levels of some hormones linked to cancer.
  • Healthy Aging & Independence—Aerobic activity may fight aging and keep us independent.  A brisk walk may not lead you to the fountain of youth, yet some research suggests that it is a good start!  Vigorous walking for an hour a day, five times a week boosts maximal oxygen, which is a measure of fitness.  In a three-month period, aerobic activity was shown to turn back the clock on 12 years of natural decline with aging. Let’s not forget it also maintains muscle strength that is vital to our independence.  The longer we keep up the activity the greater the gains.
  • Replenish Energy—Growing research suggests that “light” exercise, as little as ten minutes each day can boost our energy levels.  This includes a leisurely walk, especially beneficial for individuals with sedentary lifestyles.

With these added benefits of exercise it becomes even more essential to include physical activity into our lifestyle, even if we do not need to lose weight.

Ready, Set, Get Going
