Benefits for Coffee
Just the Facts
- After water, coffee is the most widely consumed beverage.
- One cup of coffee can contain more antioxidants than a serving of grape juice, berries and oranges.
- One cup of coffee has 85 mg of caffeine.

More good news! Coffee is a surprising source of magnesium, niacin and chromium. A cup of coffee contains a third as much potassium as a small banana. Coffee is the main dietary source of boron which may decrease insulin resistance.
Diabetes
- Shown in studies to reduce blood sugar, which may decrease the chance of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Cancer
- Studies suggest there may be a protective effect against colon and liver cancer. The combination of caffeine and exercise may guard against skin cancer!
Brain (Cognitive) Function
- According to some studies, caffeine may benefit the brain. It can temporarily sharpen thinking and may have lasting effects.
Parkinson’s
- May protect against this disease with some medications for Parkinson’s being formulated with caffeine.
Gout and Gallbladder Health
- Components in coffee other than caffeine were recently shown to reduce gout.
- Men drinking 2 to 3 cups of coffee daily were shown to reduce the risk of gallbladder disease. It appears that coffee can reduce the formation of gallstones.
A Cup of Caution –
Before you go out and purchase an extra large coffee pot, coffee may have some adverse health effects.
- May increase the LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
- Will elevate blood pressure.
- May increase the risk of stomach cancer and leukemia.
- Can interact with medications. Some drugs will combine with caffeine and enhance the effects of caffeine. Absorption of some medication may be blocked.
